Gretchen Blough Discusses China Tariffs on Marketplace

Gretchen Blough Discusses China Tariffs on Marketplace

Gretchen BloughLogistics Plus Customs Brokerage Manager Gretchen Blough makes another appearance on Marketplace, hosted by Kai Ryssdal, to discuss China tariffs.

The White House appears to be at an impasse on the future of the Trump-era tariffs on imports from China: Keep them as leverage or lift them to help curb inflation? And while that debate inside the administration continues, the customs brokers caught in the middle are stuck waiting.

“I have a fabulous team, and I had to tell them, ‘Please don’t be so efficient,’” said Blough, who works at Logistics Plus in Erie, Pennsylvania. “‘Please clear the shipments that are coming from China a little bit closer to the actual arrival time, so if we have to make adjustments, we can with minimal interruption.’”

Gretchen Blough Talks About The Unexpected on Marketplace

Gretchen BloughLogistics Plus Customs Brokerage Manager Gretchen Blough makes another appearance on Marketplace, hosted by Kai Ryssdal, to talk about customs and tariffs.

For customs broker Gretchen Blough, business has been a “little crazy.” And Russia’s invasion of Ukraine — and the disruptions it’s caused to the global supply chain — are only part of the problem.

“The port in Shanghai has been closed,” said Blough, who works at Logistics Plus in Erie, Pennsylvania. “There’s been capacity issues domestically. Also, we are dealing with some anti-dumping and countervailing issues with solar panels, so our solar customers are kind of in a holding pattern while they decide how this is going to play out.”

For Blough, change has become the norm. “Everything is just a constant pivot,” she said. “Because there hasn’t been a lot of warning to some of the issues that have happened, and we’ve just had to make do.”

Global Logistics Alert: U.S. Lifts Tariffs On British Steel

global logistics alert

Alert Message:

The United States and Britain have ended a four-year dispute over U.S. steel and aluminum tariffs. The two countries have pledged to work together to counter China in a deal that also removes British tariffs on U.S. exports including motorcycles, whiskey, and other products. Additionally, Chinese-owned steel companies in Britain must undergo annual audits to ensure that Chinese steel can’t enter the United States tariff-free.
