NMFC Changes Effective May 23, 2026

NMFC Changes Effective May 23, 2026

NMFC Changes Effective May 23, 2026As a reminder, the National Motor Freight Traffic Association’s (NMFTA) next round of actions from the Freight Classification Development Council (FCDC) Docket 2026-1, which introduces significant updates to the classification of several commodity groups, will take effect on May 23, 2026.

The NMFTA continues to move away from specific commodity descriptions in favor of broader descriptions and a standardized density scale, with density as the primary factor. These updates aim to make it easier for shippers to accurately classify freight and reduce billing disputes; the process began in January 2025 and continues with Docket 2026-1.

Key impact areas include updates to several categories, such as the drugs, medicines, toilet preparations, or personal care products category; the business or office machines category; and various obsolete provisions.

As a reminder, these changes do not come from Logistics Plus but from the NMFTA’s FCDC. Please review it to determine whether your LTL freight shipments will be affected, or contact a Logistics Plus freight specialist.

NMFC Freight Classification Changes Are Coming

NMFC Freight Classification Changes Are Coming

NMFC Freight Classification ChangesAttention all Logistics Plus customers and eShipPlus™ users:

Thursday, January 30, 2025, the National Motor Freight Traffic Association, Inc. (NMFTA)™ announced the release of Docket 2025-1 which includes significant changes to the National Motor Freight Classification (NMFC®) system used by those who ship less-than-truckload (LTL) freight. Approximately 2,500 commodity groups will move to a new, 13-subprovision density scale.

Incorrectly classifying freight with incorrect NMFC classification codes can result in higher costs, making it essential for all NMFC users—carriers, shippers, and third-party logistics providers (3PLs)—to prepare for these changes by the go-live date: July 19, 2025.

On Monday, March 3, 2025, the Freight Classification Development Council (FCDC) will conduct a public meeting, held in conjunction with the NMFTA Spring Meeting in Clearwater Beach, FL, to discuss proposals and review feedback for the NMFC as listed in Docket 2025-1.

All NMFC users are encouraged to submit feedback which should include pertinent information relating to the transportation characteristics—density, handling, stowability, and liability—of the product(s) involved or relevant to packaging materials or methods in connection with proposed packaging amendments.

NMFC users can submit feedback for Docket 2025-1 in many ways:

1. Online: Complete the feedback form at nmfcchanges.com/docket-feedback.

2. Email: Send your feedback directly to [email protected].

3. Mail: Send a letter to:

Freight Classification Development Council
1001 North Fairfax Street, Suite 600
Alexandria, VA 22314

4. In Person: Attend the FCDC meeting to be held in conjunction with the NMFTA Spring Meeting on March 3, 2025. If you wish to schedule an appearance at the meeting, please complete the “Intent to Attend” form here no less than three business days before the meeting.

Feedback submitted via form, email, or postal mail must be received by the FCDC no later than 5:00 pm ET, Tuesday, February 25, 2025. Learn more at https://info.nmfta.org/2025-nmfc-changes.

Rest assured, Logistics Plus will continue to closely monitor these changes, and we will do everything we can to proactively keep our customers informed of any potential impacts. If you have any questions, feel free to contact us at [email protected].

Is Now a Good Time to Conduct a Transportation and Logistics RFP?

Is Now a Good Time to Conduct a Transportation and Logistics RFP?

request proposal NEWAs you look to 2025, now may be a good time for shippers to conduct an RFP (Request for Proposal) for their transportation needs, especially as the market has stabilized compared to the disruptions of the past few years. Here are a few reasons why it might be advantageous:

  • Market Stability: The transportation market has become more stable, which can lead to more predictable freight rates and better carrier performance.
  • Capacity Availability: January is traditionally a slow month for freight, making it a good time to send out bids as capacity tends to be more available.
  • Strategic Planning: Conducting an RFP allows shippers to align their transportation strategies with their business goals for the upcoming year.

However, to find the best transportation and logistics solutions partner, preparing for the RFP process is important. You must understand your current challenges and cost structures, set clear goals, and ensure you have the necessary technology and resources.

Are you considering conducting an RFP soon? If so, what specific goals are you hoping to achieve?

Conducting a transportation and logistics RFP involves several steps to ensure you find the best partners and rates for your needs. Here’s a general guide to help you through the process:

  • Define Your Objectives: Determine what you want to achieve with the RFP (e.g., cost reduction, improved service levels, increased capacity).
  • Gather Data: Collect data on your current transportation needs, including commodity or product information, shipment volumes, lanes, service requirements, and historical costs. Additional data points like freight dimensions, freight classification, and accessorial service needs might also be helpful and will lead to greater rate accuracy.
  • Develop the RFP Document: Include detailed information about your company, your transportation needs, and the criteria for selecting partners. Specify the format and deadline for responses.
  • Identify Potential Partners: Research and list potential logistics partners that meet your requirements. Consider factors such as service capabilities, reputation, flexibility, technology, and financial stability.
  • Distribute the RFP: Send the RFP to the selected companies and provide a clear timeline for responses.
  • Evaluate Responses: Review the proposals based on your criteria, such as cost, service levels, and capabilities. Use a scoring system to compare the responses objectively. In many cases, it may make sense to interview finalists to ensure there is a good “culture fit” between your organization and the potential partner’s organization.
  • Negotiate Terms: Engage in negotiations with your top candidates to refine terms and conditions. Focus on achieving a balance between cost and service quality.
  • Select Your Partner(s): Choose the partners that best meet your needs based on the evaluation and negotiation process.
  • Implement and Monitor: Finalize contracts and implement the new transportation or logistics arrangements. Continuously monitor performance and maintain open communication to ensure service levels are met.
  • Review and Adjust: Periodically review the performance of your partner(s) and make adjustments as needed to optimize your transportation strategy.

Are you ready to conduct an RFP? Logistics Plus is a solutions-oriented transportation and logistics provider with a solid reputation for adding value and helping companies be successful.
