Logistics Plus Delivers four, 2-million pound gas tanks from South Korea to USA

Online video provides amazing footage of the logistics required for the move.

4-nh3-tanks-project-cargo-vERIE, Pa. (September 20, 2016) – Logistics Plus Inc., a leading worldwide provider of transportation, logistics and supply chain solutions, is proud to report that it has successfully delivered four 30x24x17 meter, 1038 metric ton (2 million pounds), empty ammonia (NH3) gas tanks from Onsan, South Korea to Portland, Oregon in the United States.  The entire project took over a year of planning, engineering, and execution, and it is the largest shipment ever handled by Logistics Plus in its 20-year history.

At the origin port in South Korea, 48-axle lines of self-propelled modular trailers were used to move the enormous tanks from their storage location onto two barges in order to transport them to the main loading port.  From there, they were carefully loaded sequentially onto a heavy-load ocean vessel. The vessel – one of only two in the world capable of handling the massive shipment – took 14 days to sail to the Vigor shipyard in Portland.  Using the vessels two massive 1500mt capacity heavylift cranes, all four tanks were discharged and loaded onto specialized modular trailers and carefully moved into final storage.

We manage many large cargo projects all around the world, but this is the largest one we’ve ever coordinated in our 20-year history,” said Frederik Geirnaert, project manager for Logistics Plus, and the leader for this project. “The Logistics Plus project cargo team has been at the center of this move in many ways. We handled the selection of the most skilled subcontractors, organized a tender for each part of the move, provided oversight and drafting of the method statement,  liaised with the marine warranty surveyor, provided on-site supervision of every move, and we also found on-the-spot solutions to the few small issues that inevitably come up along the way. In the end, our passion for excellence came through once again.

Global Project Logistics Teamwork In Action!

Global Project Logistics Teamwork In Action!

Here’s a quick ‘play-by-play’ example of how the Logistics Plus (LP) global project cargo team springs into action when presented with a logistics challenge from one of our customers.  Now that’s global project logistics teamwork!

Lifting-Lugs-Belgium-Turkey GIF

26.05 The LP Belgium office received a call from our customer to urgently send lifting lugs to Turkey (which then led to a request to ship 18 windmill tower sections from Turkey to the United Kingdom). Bahadir Erdil and Basar Kandil (from LP Turkey) happened to be in Antwerp, so it was set in motion fast.
27.05 Hilde Van De Woestyne arranged for the pick up in the Netherlands.
29.05 The lifting lugs fly from Amsterdam to Istanbul.
30.05 Basar is back in Turkey and initiates custom clearance.
01.06 Basar arranges delivery to wind tower manufacturer.
06.06 Frederik Geirnaert gets the RFQ for the shipment of 18 windmill tower sections (4100 cbm).
07.06 Bahadir spends the next few days negotiating with various carriers to find the first available ship at the best rates.
09.06 We get the order!
10.06 Mert Altinsaray arranges trucking of first pieces from supplier. He also attends load-out in-person and makes some repairs/fixes.
23.06 Mert arranges trucking for final pieces from supplier. Meanwhile Bahadir is at the Izmir port to supervise loading.
24.06 Mert and Bahadir finalize loading. Doruk Yagci finalizes the documents.
05.06 Ship arrives in Southampton, England. Frederik attends the discharging. Shipment is successfully delivered to its final destination! Had the shipment not arrived on time, the customer would have missed an important deadline – it needed to ship one set of completed towers from Southampton by July 6th at 9:00 am or they would have missed a police escort; and the next possibility for that police escort was 6 weeks later!

If you have a project logistics challenge of your own, let us know. The LP team stands ready to help you too!

Logistics Plus Receives an SDCE 100 Supply Chain Projects Award

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Logistics Plus Named to Supply & Demand Chain Executive’s SDCE 100 Top Supply Chain Projects

Massive cargo project involving the import and transport of large gas pipes earns award

SDC100_Logistics_PlaqueERIE, Pa. (June 28, 2016) – Logistics Plus Inc., a leading worldwide provider of transportation, logistics and supply chain solutions, is proud to announce it has been selected by Supply & Demand Chain Executive, the executive’s user manual for successful supply and demand chain transformation, as a recipient of an “SDCE 100” Award for 2016.

The SDCE 100 is an annual list of 100 great supply chain projects. These projects can serve as a guide for supply chain executives who are looking for new opportunities to drive improvement in their own operations. These projects show how supply chain solution and service providers help their customers and clients achieve supply chain excellence and prepare their supply chains for success. The supply chain project submitted by Logistics Plus that earned this recognition involved the import coordination and final delivery, last summer, of nearly 2,500 sections of 40’ and 60’ pipes from Germany to various locations in the Midwest region of the United States.

Our goal with 2016’s SDCE 100 is to shine the spotlight on successful and innovative transformation projects that deliver bottom-line value to small, medium and large enterprises across the supply chain,” says Ronnie Garrett, editor of Supply & Demand Chain Executive. “The selected projects can serve as a roadmap for supply chain executives looking for new opportunities to drive improvement in their own operations. We congratulate all of our winners for a job well done!

This is an awesome award for our project cargo division,” said Jim Berlin, founder and CEO of Logistics Plus. “We handle a lot of pretty cool logistics projects for major companies all around the world. We give our employees plenty of internal accolades, but oftentimes the great work they do on these projects goes ‘unsung’ to the outside world. In this case, it’s nice to see some well-deserved external recognition for another challenging cargo project successfully completed.
